About

I began my career as a graphic designer, studying at Somerset College of Arts, where I fell in love with image-based storytelling.

For three decades I’ve collaborated with people and brands, bringing words to life through pictures. I’m a former President of D&AD — the Oscars of the design and advertising world.

I believe in visceral, visually led filmmaking — but the films must mean something, otherwise it’s a wasted opportunity. I believe in the Trojan Horse approach: entertain, thrill, make people laugh, but there must be a heart inside it. Not preachy, never that — but something. And that “something” is always the reason I make the film. It’s what keeps me going.

I’m a visual translator, an obsessive, working from script to storyboard to shoot, and staying hands-on right through post. I love collaborating — it takes me back to my art school days — working alongside post houses, composers, editors, producers, set designers, wardrobe artists, and a trusted crew built up over the years.

There are few things in life better than watching an actor switch into character at the click of their fingers — stepping into the set, the costume, the light — and seeing everything lift off the page into something alive. Working with actors is truly magical.

Filmmaking is a process, and I adore the journey: reading a story, seeing it spark to life in my head, walking around listening to playlists that reinforce a scene or mood.

I’m lucky enough to be dyslexic — it means I see the world differently. It gives me an obsession and stamina that carries me through the whole process, sometimes three or four years.

I didn’t go to film school, which means I’m emotionally led rather than technically led. I follow instinct — it’s what I’ve built my career on: putting images together that move an audience. I’m guided by my gut, not by trends or fashion. Stories find me, and then I do whatever it takes to get them onto the screen. After that, I leave them. I never watch my films after the premiere — I can’t bear seeing the bits I didn’t get right. No one else might notice, but I do.

I live between London and South West France, where I’m a stone mason in the mornings and a scriptwriter in the afternoons. It’s much the same — one is built stone by stone, the other page by page — but at least at the end of the day I can say: I built that.
